Strain description | Compound heterozygous mice conditionally targeted for Numb and Numblike (loxP) and some of them deleted for the other conditional allele. The selection marker in Numb (loxPneoRloxP) was deleted by Cre recombinase. However, this cassette is still present in the conditionally targeted allele of Numblike in these mice as a cassette flanked with FRT sites (FRTneoRFRT; [loxn eo]). In general, the purpose of the conditional alleles is to analyze the function of the Numb and Numblike proteins in mice after their conditional ablation upon expression of Cre recombinase. Parents heterozygous for a deleted allele of each gene allow to generate (1) compound homozygous null mutant embryos for the study of embryonic phenotypes or (2) adult mice homozygous for the deletion of Numblike. |
Colony maintenance | Compound heterozygous mice are efficient breeders (Numb[loxP / -]; Numblike[loxP / -]). By contrast, mice homozygous for the deletion of Numblike have a small litter size and, hence, reproduce inefficiently. That problem of low breeding efficiency might rely on diminished fertility of he female homozygotes. |
