Strain development | Developed by Takao Iwawaki, Advanced Science Institute, RIKEN in 2005. The transgene was injected into the pronuclei of C57BL/6J fertilized eggs. The mice were backcrossed to C57BL/6J. |
Strain description | ERAI (ER stress-activated indicator) transgenic mice carry human XBP1 and luciferase fusion gene under control of a CA promoter (cytomegalovirus enhancer and chicken beta-actin promoter). Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is caused by the accumulation of unfolded proteins in the ER lumen, and is associated with vascular and neurodegenerative diseases. The transcripts from ERAI constructs are spliced under ER stress, the spliced mRNA is translated into an XBP1-luc fusion protein, which can be detected by fluorescence of luciferase that mediated by luciferin substrate injection. This strain is useful to monitor physiological and pathological ER stress in vivo. |
